Today I wanted to share with you what I learned from local local Indonesian people who considered me as friend while most foreigners coming on Gili air are just tourists because no one takes the trouble to really make their acquaintance.
One day on Gili air, I met the man on the picture named Aleks from a little village on Lombok Island.
I was walking around the little island with my devil stick (I'll show you tomorrow what it is exactly) to make it simple it's a juggling object. And when he saw me with it, he stopped me and asked me if I can show him some tricks. I showed him what I can do, he was really impressed then we started to get to know each other and talk about everything and nothing.
I was happy to met a local people with whom I could have a conversation in English.
Aleks sells clothes, pottery, coconut oil he makes himself and other summer accessories. All around the island there are small shops like Aleks and they know each other for the most part. So I met the sellers next to his shop, there was Man and Udi but only Man spoke good English.
And the next 3 days I spent with them, just sitting on the green bench, sharing our culture and stories.
I learned that for the most part they lived in the back of their shop or rented apartments.
The first day, Aleks invited me for dinner in his small apartment with only 2 rooms, one bedroom / living room and one bathroom / toilet / kitchen (yes the toilet and the kitchen are in the same room..).
Moreover, they only return a few times to their village to bring back the money they have earned to their family. And I had the chance that Man invite me in his village (Jeringo) on Lombok and share his everyday life for 2 days ; take shower in a source, eat with hand, drink rice wine and break the fasting (because they are Muslim and it was the month the ramadan).
It was really interesting to live in this community. However I was like an
extraterrestrial because everyone was watching me. Fortunately Man told me that many people said I was handsome ahah.
I could talk about this journey for a long time yet but I will resume what I lived in few lessons I learned from this Travel.
It's incredible as the people who have the least share the most. We must become more generous with the others.
Then like Man repeat me some times : " sloooowly ", he is right. He is 31 years old and he looks younger than me !
Indonesian people takes the time to live and they don't live stressful life.
Think about it and see you tomorrow for another post !
Thank you and namaste 🙏✌☺
